Target chargeback recovery — VMG, routing, shortage.

Target's VMG is one of the most strictly enforced compliance manuals in US retail. Routing, label, ASN, and shortage chargebacks compound fast. We dispute what's recoverable and close the SOPs that cause the rest.

What we recover at Target

Every category Target's VMG charges back, plus shortage and post-audit. We file with the specific evidence Target's ops team will accept — not generic templates.

  • Routing chargebacks — wrong carrier, wrong mode, wrong dock. Disputed with original routing instruction.
  • Label-spec chargebacks — UCC-128, GS1, case-pack. Disputed with proof of compliance.
  • ASN/EDI chargebacks — 856 timing, accuracy, GTIN mismatches. Disputed with EDI logs.
  • Shortage claims — invoiced but not received. Disputed with POD and weighed shipment records.
  • Post-audit — retroactive deductions from Target's audit partners, often 6–18 months out.
  • Freight & detention — when documentation supports the carrier or appointment claim.

Why Target chargebacks compound

One label-spec miss is $620. Repeat it on every PO that quarter and it's $40K. The VMG isn't written for suppliers — it's written for Target's compliance team — so the rules behind each chargeback aren't always obvious until you've worked them. That's the gap we close.

Common questions

What Target chargebacks does ClearChain dispute?
Routing chargebacks, label-spec chargebacks, ASN/EDI chargebacks, shortage claims, freight claims, and most VMG-defined compliance fees. Plus post-audit claims, which Target frequently issues months after the original transaction.
How long is the Target dispute window?
Typically 60 days from the deduction. Post-audit claims have separate, longer windows. We track every deduction's window from the day it hits to make sure none age out.
Do you work with Target Plus marketplace sellers too?
Our focus is 1P (wholesale) suppliers selling into Target stores and DCs via Partners Online. Target Plus marketplace deductions are a different system; we don't currently work them.
